Roseville REPRODUCTON Pottery Luffa Wall Pocket similar to Roseville Style no. 1272-8 This is a beautiful reproduction wall pocket, in excellent condition. Nice crisp mold and colors. There are no chips or cracks. Produced as a nearly perfect reproduction of the original Roseville Luffa Wall Pocket. Roseville reproduction mark on back side with a dry foot. Deep green glaze with elevated leafing, vines, and flowers. Elbow arms protrude from each side of the wall pocket sometimes called a wall sconce. Depicted on the wall pocket are a Long Natural fruit vine with lush green leaves and beautiful white and red flowers. The long vining leaves adorned with flowers that become the luffa gourd. These reproductions were made in China in the early 1980’s to emulate the original Roseville products. They would allow citizens who adored the Roseville pottery art but could not afford the extravagant prices to purchase it. Roseville Pottery begin to fetch encredible prices in the decade of the 1980’s and beyond. Roseville art pottery prices began to skyrocket as collectors and decorators alike began to acquire pieces for their collections or use in modern home decoration. A deeper appreciation for the artistic and visual impression of the Roseville art pottery began to become excessively popular thus the increase in cost of own one of the art objects. Consequently Citizens began to purchase look-alike Roseville products at a more affordable price and thus could enjoy similar art shapes, colors and textures of the original Roseville Pottery. Now collectors and buyers akin are enjoying Roseville reproductions and collecting Roseville reproductions in earnest, consequently Roseville reproduction prices are escalating and demand in for these fine reproductions is increasing at a phenomenal rate.
The Roseville Luffa flower and leafing depicted in this object is influenced by the Vining Luffa Gourd. The are a Long Natural fruit that is about 19’ long with lush green leaves and beautiful white and red flowers. The long vining leaves adorned with flowers and the elongated gourds, the luffa is native to the subtropical and tropical regions of the earth and are related to the cucumber family. The species is native to tropical Asia but has been under cultivation in Egypt since late medieval times. The plant name "Luffa" was introduced to Western botany nomenclature by the botanist Johann Vesling who visited Egypt in the late 1620s and described the plant under cultivation with artificial irrigation in Egypt In 1706 the botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort introduced the formal botany genus name “Luffa” and is a member of the cucumber family.
