Here is a vintage (serial number 533015) Holton H-279 "Farkas" Double French Horn. This instrument was originally developed and designed by Philip Farkas in the 1950s. This horn is in  good condition, and plays well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. The Holton 279 is identical to the Holton 179 double french horn except that it has a screw bell configuration. The horn started life as a standard Holton 179 double french horn, and has been upgraded to a screw bell configuration, which means that it is now a Holton 279. The bell screw has standard Alexander threads, so the bell flare is interchangeable with many other flares available on the market.
As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings throughout the horn as well as light pitting, etching, and scratching. There are a few braces that have been replaced, and the second finger button has also been replaced. The valve caps are the only part of the horn that is not solid nickel-silver and are nickel-plated instead, and that nickel plating is wearing off in a few places. The bell flare has a few brazed repairs, and the bell engraving has been partly obscured by the bell ring, and all that remains is the top part of “HOLTON”. The leadpipe has “H179” stamped near the mouthpiece receiver.
This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a new ProTec Propac case, and a mouthpiece for play-testing purposes.
How the horn plays: Full, bright and sonorous sound, with a smooth, even tone. The F and Bb side timbre and intonation match well once the horn is properly intonated (i.e. the slides are pulled to the correct amount). The horn is open, responsive, and flexible, playing all registers with ease. All registers of the horn play fluidly and speak very well, with a clear high register and a full, rich low register.
