Four 18th c. French Sterling Silver Wine Coasters c. 1800

If you collect French wine tasters, or you are just an oenophile, these are for you. Why use English wine coasters, do you drink English wine.
This is a set of 4 wine coasters, although one is not exactly the same. They are all by
Abel Etienne GIROUX
Paris 1798-? They all have the 1st Coq mark for 1798-1809 and most have
the
1794-7 association des orfevres which was also used later. The
The odd thing is
that
the fourth one has a slightly different design. The Griffen has a dolphin tail instead of hind legs. I have had these for decades but never noticed. They all are obviously made around the same time, and I can
’
t figure out a logical explanation for the mismatch unless originally there were more coasters in two designs. In any case I am going to say one is for white wine (sea food) and the rest are for red. If you don
’
t like this explanation, buy them and make up your own. One of
the
red wines has only a partially struck maker
’
s mark and is missing
the association of orfevres mark. There are very minor
condition issues, mostly just dings and dents around the base, and slight imperfection in the cut out work.
A set of 4 French wine coasters from this period is very very rare. In fact a search will probably not turn up a similar set anywhere. In my opinion they are far more aesthetically pleasing than English ones. Quatre
